Maddox waited downstairs, rubbing his hands together as he anticipated the night. When Ashley stepped back into the family room, he allowed his eyes to linger on her outfit. “Perfect,” he thought, then noticed the colors. Everything was dark and she even had a hoodie which would further protect her.

“Here, you’ll need this,” he said, offering her a dark, knit hat. “Let’s go!”

He took her hand, leading her out through the back of the house. “Don’t pull the face mask down yet.”

He almost laughed at the confused look in her eyes, but she looked down at the cap in her hands and he suspected that she was understanding the plan. When he turned left down the street, she tugged gently at his hand. “The wind chimes are this way,” she told him, starting to point towards the houses in the other direction.

Maddox grabbed her hands, aware of several people in the neighborhood who had the doorbells with motion activated cameras. “We’re going this way,” he told her, a warning in his voice and in his eyes.

“Why this way?” she asked, shifting to follow him.

“Because several of your neighbors have cameras on their front porches. We’re going this way to throw off suspicion. We can’t go out your back gate into the alley because of my investigation, so we’re taking a circuitous route using the front door.”

“Ah!” she replied, nodding her head and wishing she’d thought of that.

“Don’t beat yourself up, Ashley,” he said with a chuckle.

“I’m sorry?” He looked down at her and she could feel his warmth. In fact, Ashley moved closer to him, needing…something. She wasn’t sure what it was, but he had it.

“You were wishing that you’d thought of the issue of the cameras. But you’re one of those people who don’t break the rules. So it makes sense that you wouldn’t think of trying to avoid detection. You’re honest and open.” He pulled her closer, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. “That’s a good thing.”

Ashley tilted her head to look up at him, feeling a warmth surge through her at his touch. A warmth that was out of proportion to the heat coming from his body. “Okay,” she whispered, unable to say anything more at the moment.

The darkness enveloped them and she felt a closeness with him. It was a pretty wonderful sensation. “What are we going to do?”

He smiled, his expression visible only because of the moonlight shining down on them.

“We’re taking care of the wind chimes,” was all he would say.

“That’s it? No other details?”

“Not yet,” he told her. Once again, he looked down at her. “If we’re caught sneaking around, you’ll have plausible deniability.”

Her eyes narrowed up at him. “Isn’t that what they say to the president when their minions are doing something illegal?”

“Yes,” he replied with a chuckle.
